Justice for Tedi Snyder
And All Youth Serving Life Sentences
"In Defense of Child Soldiers"
WHEN: Friday, May 28, 2010
Court Case at 9:00 AM
Press Conference at 1:30 PM, Downstairs on Temple
WHERE: Downtown Los Angeles Criminal Court Building = Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center at 210 West Temple Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012 Judge Sam Ohta, 13th Floor, Division 120
WHAT: Tedi Snyder, arrested at age 15, will be sentenced to 80 years to Life for a case where no one was killed. His first parole date will be at the age of 95 unless we fight harder to change California's laws. Last week's Supreme Court decision in Graham v. Florida, where a sentence of Life Without Parole for juveniles was deemed "Unconstitutional", gives us new ammunition to argue that these sentences are also "cruel and unusual."
The United States is the only country in the world that sentences youth to life without parole and other extreme sentences.
Trapped in a war on the streets, studies now show that LA's youth have higher levels of Post Traumatic Stress than the soldiers returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan.
Join the YJC to organize for justice and fair sentencing for Tedi Snyder and all California's youth. We are also calling for the California Assembly to pass Senate Bill 399 to give youth with Juvenile Without LWOP sentences a review of their sentence.

The Youth Justice Coalition will be marching 50 miles to challenge L.A.’s and California’s juvenile justice policies that lead to the mass incarceration of young people. Youth will specifically be asking the public as well as public officials to support our $ for $ (Dollar for Dollar) Campaign. For every $ used to lock up a young person, we want an equal or greater amount used for community owned, community operated alternatives to incarceration. Young people will begin their march at Sylmar (Barry J. Nidorf Juvenile Hall) on Monday, December 14th and end at Norwalk CYA/DJJ (Southern Reception Center) on Thursday, December 17th at sunset.
Tuesday, October 27th, 3-5pm at USC. YOUTH SPEAK OUT ON WHO AND WHAT WE WANT FROM L.A. COUNTY’S NEXT LAW ENFORCEMENT LEADERS. The solutions agreed on will be taken to the Police Commission, Board of Supervisors and City Attorney. Bring out as many youth as possible. Check out the flyer on page two for outreach.
Wednesday, October 28th, 8:30am – 2pm WORK DAY TO CREATE VISUALS, TESTIMONY AND CHANTS TO PROTEST THE LIFE SENTENCING OF STEVEN MENENDEZ AND JOSE GARCIA. Steven was 14 and José was 16 when a 26 year-old told them to drive with him to “talk to some girls.” Instead, the 26-year-old sat in the back seat and fired a gun out of the car, killing a teenager on the street. He was never arrested and has since been killed. But, the two teenagers were convicted of murder last month after going back and forth between juvenile hall and court for nearly three years. In the next couple of weeks they will be sentenced. They face 50-to-Life (Steven) and Life Without the Possibility of Parole (Jose). On the sentencing date, we hope to pack the courtroom and follow it up with a media action outside. This will be the first of many actions to push for the END OF LIFE WITHOUT PAROLE AND OTHER EXTREME SENTENCES FOR YOUTH IN CALIFORNIA, starting by working to PASS SENATE BILL 399 which we got through the State Senate last year, and have to push through the Assembly this year.
Friday, October 30th, 5pm: Check out the YJC’s Haunted Jailhouse at Chuco’s. It’s intended to scare you, and get people to talk about conditions inside prisons and jails. Print the flyers on page 3 of the action update to get people out. A dance and free candy follows the Jailhouse Tour!
